Who we are: The Family Umbrella is a relatively new Techno and arts collective based out of Toronto, Canada. Our hearts belong in thriving Techno cities like Berlin, Tokyo, Barcelona, São Paolo, Ljubljana and many other international centres - we strive to bring that same energy to Toronto, a city which was once a North American Techno bastion, but has since lost that Techno vibe. We want to be your go-to for Techno events in Toronto, as well as other Techno-minded happenings that make this city worth visiting!
The original intent was, and still is, to allow FU to be an organic process - you plant the seed and see if it takes root. FU was originally conceived in 2003, and is now ready to blossom!
Though the concept is still fresh (and will remain so, until further notice!), our various members have decades of combined experience under their belts. But, more on these fine folk later…before we go any further, let's take a look at what's meant by “Techno”…
(logo of the annual ILOVETECHNO festival in Ghent, Belgium, now in its 14th year!)
Unfortunately, the dictionary definition for Techno is sorely lacking, stating that it is:
-noun- a style of disco music characterized by very fast synthesizer rhythms, heavy use of samples, and a lack of melody.
Kind of dull and “blah”, non?
A more appropriate definition would be this little blurb, which was sent out in our first PIVOT email list invite:
Pivot is Techno. And by Techno, we mean “Techno” like John Coltrane and Thelonious Monk mean “Jazz”. To be “jazzed” means to be hyped for something - excited…and since “techno'd” hasn't been given official verb status yet, you'll just have to envision what we have in store for you. Let's just say that our version of Techno isn't relegated to this month's catchphrase - Detroit, Chicago, Electro, Booty, Italo, Disco, bangin', slammin', deep, dirty and naaaasty Funk, Funk, Funk - all get fair and equal treatment when we hit the decks. While the latest and greatest seems to be what most everyone is chasing after, we only care for good music, period - doesn't matter when it came out, as long as it makes ya MOVE, as long as it makes ya SUH-WET-AH…seen?
As you can see, Techno is more a sentiment, a feeling, than it is an actual style of music. Of course, the word wouldn't exist without the music, and here are a few of the artists who have provided inspiration and influence…
Claude Young, Ben Sims, Jeff Mills, Steve Bicknell, Fumiya Tanaka, DJ Shufflemaster, Cari Lekebusch, Joel Mull, Adam Beyer, Glenn Wilson, Surgeon, James Ruskin, Oliver Ho, Green Velvet, Stephen Brown, DJ Funk, Joey Beltram, Umek, Steve Stoll, Jay Denham, Damon Wild, Rob Hood, Steve Rachmad, Cristian Vogel, Dave Clarke, DJ Bone, DJ Rush, Chris Liebing, Thomas Krome…
…just to name a few!
