Nov 7 - Bluntworks All-Vinyl Revue @ MonoMachina's Death Disco II

Posted on Oct 21st, 2009 by The Family Umbrella : Toronto Techno Collective The Family Umbrella

I'm very happy to announce that the lads at MonoMachina have made me their resident DJ.  The first Death Disco was a solid affair and the lineup for number two looks just as, if not more enticing...

Cover for this event is $10, but I also have a limited number of $5, reduced-at-the-door (before midnight) guestlist slots available.  If you'd like to get on the list, email PivotTechno@gmail.com with your first and last name and the number of people attending.

See you there!

On Saturday, November 7 MonoMachina returns to Nocturne Nightclub for Death Disco II, featuring a killer new lineup of all-Toronto PAs and DJs!

Featuring:

MAIN ROOM

&

BRAD MACHADO (Suite Girl Music - http://www.myspace.com/bradmachado1)

The trio of George, Gmoney and Dimimak have built a loyal following of Lunatics from as far away as Paris and Japan, via regular podcasts and a string of releases that have found their way to Juno, Beatport and iTunes. Accompanying the Lunatics will be Brad Machado, with his debut Live PA performance. Walls are gonna shake as L.O.S. bring their big-room sound to the Nocturne dancefloor!

DUBTRAK (http://www.dubtrak.com/)

Satta, mon! Dubtrak's fusion of Dub, Trance and Tribal sensibilities culminated in 2008's 'Dubtrak Assault Unit' LP (with the track 'Heavy Roll' featured on a 2009, 2 CD compilation showcasing Polish (!!) Dub artists) Expect ultra-deep bass and otherworldly machine music from
this up-and-downtempo-coming luminary.

S.C.I.E.N.C.E (http://www.myspace.com/sciencehomework)

S.C.I.E.N.C.E are to live electronic music what open source is to software. And if you don't get the comparison, just bring your dancing feet and you'll be just fine...

and SPANKBOX (minimal techno/house)

FRONT ROOM

BLUNTWORKS
(WestsideWax & Jack Tripper)
ALL-VINYL REVUE

Take two DJs with nearly 40 combined years behind the wheels of steel, who believe that "vinyl is still king" and give them their own room for 5 unpredictable hours of classic Chicago House, 303 Acid, Detroit Tech and Electro, Italo-House, New Wave, New Beat, Booty Bass and Ghetto Tracks and you have a rough approximation of the Bluntworks experience...

MonoMachina resident DJ WestsideWax (http://thefamilyumbrella.gaia.com/) has shared the stage with some of the biggest players in the game, including Richie Hawtin, Roger Sanchez and Ghetto-Tech don DJ Godfather. Now operating a modest Toronto-based DJ school, helping kids and adults alike to appreciate the fine art of the ones and twos, he'll be hauling in crates stuffed with bass-laden goodness both old and new.

Listen to WestsideWax - Tavia's Traditional Party Mixtape No. 1

Listen to WestsideWax - Beatroot Inspired

Jack Tripper (a.k.a. Dylan T.) has been a fixture in the Toronto party scene since the mid-90s, honing sets that reach into some of the weirder and more eclectic corners of the four/four bounce. Most recently heard at Promise's Dirty Motor Fridays alongside Detroit's Twonz, and laying the smackdown at Pivot's Patterns, he returns as part of the Bluntworks brigade, with a slick mix of the best in electronic vinyl from the past 40 years.

Time For A New MIX - WestsideWax

Posted on Oct 21st, 2009 by The Family Umbrella : Toronto Techno Collective The Family Umbrella

http://www.emptybottle.org/images/maxell_xl_2_90_c.jpg

There was a point and time not so long ago when tape cassettes were the prefered method of distributing mixes.  Much more compact than the reel-to-reel tapes that preceeded them, they acted as the DJ's calling card - when promotion tended to be considerably more face-to-face and hand-to-hand than in today's insta-chat existence.

Tavia's Traditional Party Mixtape No. 1 clocks in at 90:26 minutes.  With a little handiwork, it would fit perfectly on the Maxell XLII 90 pictured above.

This mix was recorded on the Sunday night of Thanksgiving weekend, after T and I returned from dinner at her 'rents place - I played, while T did the artwork for the tracklisting.  As always, it's an all-vinyl excursion, completely improvised on three decks from one end to the other, and while there are a couple of dodgy bailouts, the party vibe that came out of this mix was enough to convince me to put it up for download.  'TTPMN1' features a nice-cross section of House, Techno, Electro (as well as couple of my favourite Industrial and Italo cuts) from the past 25 years, the kind of bumping machine music that is very well-suited to venues such as dilapidated warehouses with big walls of rented speakers or beachside in Southeast Asia at 4 in the a.m. (trust me on that one...)

Since the mix is a bit longer than usual, I've made 320Kbps, 192Kbps and 128Kbps versions available - the 320K version is over 200MB, so if your bandwidth is limited, pick one of the other two, which both sit closer to 100MB in size.

Dig IT!

WestsideWax @ MonoMachina's DEATH DISCO - August 22 at Nocturne

Posted on Aug 9th, 2009 by The Family Umbrella : Toronto Techno Collective The Family Umbrella

MonoMachina raises the bar on Saturday, August 22 with DEATH DISCO, a night of curiously delicious beats, courtesy of your choice, all-local lineup...

PAs:

Fiction
(http://www.myspace.com/fiction1)

Delivering your dose of demented Breakbeat for the evening, Fiction returns to the spotlight after having launched the SexDrumsAndBrokenSouls LP at Holy Joe's earlier this year. Breakbeat fans old and new won't want to miss out on this special live performance!

Alltronic
(http://www.myspace.com/alltronic)

Self-described as a cross between DJ Premier and Kraftwerk, Alltronic swims in the deep end of the Electro/Breakbeat pool, texturing bubbling synths and rumbling bass into headspace music with B-Boy attitude, designed to work both body and soul.

Touchboy
(http://www.myspace.com/touchboy)

A veteran of the Chiptune posse, Touchboy's focus lies in mastering the art of merging various lo-fi videogame bleeps, bloops and melodies with an arsenal of effects and slick drum programming in a Techno/Electro bent. The result of this alchemy is a highly funky and danceable lifeform that you'll need to witness in person to fully appreciate!

DJs:

WestsideWax
(http://thefamilyumbrella.gaia.com/)

Quiet and understated on the outside, described as "the Buddha behind the decks", this 25-year DJ veteran reveals his deep, dark and nasty side upon firing up three turntables, assualting dancefloors with a heady cocktail of classic Chi-town, Motor City and tricky-tracky, funked out mayhem.

Amanda Astra
(http://www.myspace.com/amandaastra)

Quickly gaining ground in Toronto's notoriously fickle club scene, Amanda Astrid has graced the likes of Footwork and The Gallery at Guvernment and now brings a dirty slapdown of House and Techno to round off the Nocturne roster.

FU Recommends: DJ T-1000 @ The Basement, August 15, 2009

Posted on Aug 9th, 2009 by The Family Umbrella : Toronto Techno Collective The Family Umbrella

It isn't too often that we give the nod to events in this city - but then again, it isn't too often that we get such a class lineup of Detroit and Toronto veterans playing under one roof:

DJ T-1000 a.k.a. Alan Oldham, DJ, producer, one time Minister of Information for seminal Detroit Tech label Underground Resistance and artwork and label designer for both Transmat Records and Djax-Up-Beats), promoter and Hijacked Records boss Antwon "Twonz" Faulkner, Derrick "Dez" Ramirez,  who hosted the killer Detor parties in Detroit and various southern Ontario locales in the 1990s, and Kenny Glasgow, a Toronto veteran and now an established producer with his No. 19 label.  A respectable lineup for Toronto Techno lovers across the board and the kind that is becoming more and more prevalent as Toronto once again warms up to sounds that were once a staple in this city.  Definitely worth checking.

Lessons in FUN @ WestsideWax DJ School SUMMER SESSIONS!

Posted on Jul 10th, 2009 by The Family Umbrella : Toronto Techno Collective The Family Umbrella
Updates to FU are on their way, but first...

We're back from playing at our first outdoor festival (how much fun is DJing under the moon and stars?), and we're amped and geared up for SUMMER SESSIONS for kids and teens aged 12-18 at WestsideWax DJ School!

Our lessons are normally one hour in length, but during Summer Sessions you'll get to double your fun! Don't spend the summer bored - put the needle on the record and learn how to DJ!

Here's how it works...

Commencing Monday, July 20 and running through to Friday, August 28, WestsideWax will be running one-on-one, two hour DJ workshops, twice weekly.

Session 1: Monday and Thursday, 1 p.m. - 3 p.m.
Session 2: Tuesday and Friday, 1 p.m. - 3 p.m.

(for the early risers, occasional 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. classes will also be offered on an on-demand basis - contact for details)

During Summer Sessions, you'll have the opportunity to learn the basics of DJing in its original vinyl format, as well as equipment setup and maintenance and the history of Dance Music, from the early days of Chicago and Detroit right up to today's worldwide influence! At WestsideWax we go beyond "just playing music" and delve into the fine art of storytelling on wax. Whether you're an absolute beginner or an intermediate looking to polish your game, whether you're just curious or have had the DJ itch forever, this summer WestsideWax is the place to be!

The cost for each two-day Summer Session is $75 - sign up for just one week or for the whole summer! Slots will fill up fast, so reserve your session early! Potential students who'd like to come over for a free demo session before signing up, simply contact us at WestsideWax@sympatico.ca or at (416) 516-1563.

In addition to Summer Sessions, we're still running our regular adult classes as well - drop us a line for more details!

Bizzay!

Posted on May 25th, 2009 by The Family Umbrella : Toronto Techno Collective The Family Umbrella

As you can probably tell by the lack of activity on the FU b-l-a-u-g-h, we're on a bit of a break.  Maybe we're a little busy with school, with midterms and assignments a-plenty due over the next month...maybe we're working out the details of our next event, so it sticks in your head when your mind inevitably gets blown by its awesomeness...maybe we're in the kitchen making pasta sauce and gearing up for an early afternoon Yoga class...maybe we're listening to trickster Dave Clarke playing at the INOX Electronic Festival in Toulouse, nicked from TranceAddict's TeknoTime thread in the Canuck section of the forums...

...maybe all of the above - see you soon!

Photos and reviews from PATTERNS @ Yauca

Posted on Apr 22nd, 2009 by The Family Umbrella : Toronto Techno Collective The Family Umbrella

(larger versions available in the gallery, with video and audio clips to follow soon!)

----------

Good times yet again. It was my first time hearing Dylan T play in a club environment, and he played some quality tracks and did a great job.  Ian always brings his fine trickery spicing up every mix.  No mercy from Rouchos.  Kept the party bangin'.  Fun times, good tunes, good peeps, nice sound...

----------

...the A/V + sweet tunage that night was far better than I've heard at a most big production parties.

----------

Good vibe....good tunes....great sound.  The guy who was doing the visuals live on his computer via LCD was also an amazing touch.

----------

Once again, we'd like to thank everyone who contributed to a great evening, encouraging us to continue taking our events to a higher level with each effort!  The next one is scheduled for late May/early June, with a possible deck party fundraiser at Casa WestsideWax in between - check back for details, or receive regular updates by geting on the PivotTechno email list at PivotTechno@gmail.com!

Core Matrix joins PATTERNS

Posted on Apr 14th, 2009 by The Family Umbrella : Toronto Techno Collective The Family Umbrella

Yes, yes y'all!

We're happy to announce that our friend BA from Core Matrix has signed on board to provide us with live animations for PATTERNS.  Core Matrix has graced the Web with all sorts of insanity over the past several years, first with the mindbendingly detailed world of Griddleville, followed by the online D.I.Y. comic sensation Bitstrips.  BA has a longstanding connecting with the rave scene, and we're hyped that he's agreed to take the experience of our upcoming event to a whole new level with his improvised visuals.

We're also working on some of our own eye-candy to complete the picture for PATTERNS.  A few $10 strings of super-bright LEDs from Chinatown, a long roll of chicken wire, et voilà!  So far, we have a giant blue brain and some sort of weird, green alien unit - we'll see what inspiration brings us over the next few days!

We had such a good time the first time around, that we're already at it again!

Main Entry: Pattern
Pronunciation: \ pāt'ərn\
Function: noun

1. A model or original used as an archetype.
2. A person or thing considered worthy of imitation.
4. A design of natural or accidental origin.
7. A composite of traits or features characteristic of an individual or a group: one's pattern of behaviour.

1. A mesmerizing beat designed to hold your mind's attention while your body moves.

VOID & PivotTechno Present:
PATTERNS
A night of Birthday Beats, Bass and Finely-Aged DJs!

We fired the first volley with Lost Frequencies - Return To The D, now we’re back with a Detroit-inspired birthday extravaganza. Come join us and watch two of our three deck maestros age right before your very eyes, even as they manage to hold down out-of-control BASS in a total vortex of twisted synths and samples!

Featuring Special Birthday Guest DJ:

Dylan T.

Refusing to be bound-in by trends, back turned to fickle and formulaic, cookie-cutter turntable filler, Dylan T. is a Toronto original who‘s been making underground waves in the city since the glory days of raves and shadowy warehouse parties. Having just completed recon after blowing away a packed house at Dirty Motor, Birthday Boy #1 celebrates 30 years on the planet by delivering a spicy paella of Italo, Acid and Classic House, smattered liberally with New Wave, No-Wave, Tech, Electro and a slew of other sounds that defy definition but that always lead to serious dancefloor Jit, Juke, Pop, Lock and even
the incurable GitGitdown Syndrome.

Andreas Marouchos
(Energy 105.1 Radio, http://www.groovetech.com/rouchos)

If Techno is a science, then the man known to many as “Rouchos” is its Archimedes. Jaws hit the floor at our opener, as both the uninitiated and well-versed watched the master throw down an onslaught of dirty 4/4, running the range from rolling Tribal to Disco mashup to buzzsaw Industrial-strength beats. If you love to see and hear DJs who truly know how to WORK IT on 3 x Technics SL-1200 MK2, then the sweet spot on the dancefloor during the peak
of a Rouchos set is waiting just for you!

WestsideWax
(PivotTechno, http://thefamilyumbrella.gaia.com)

WestsideWax on turning 40:

“While it’s ‘just a number‘, and I really don’t feel any older than I did ten, fifteen or even twenty years ago, I live to celebrate, and that’s what this day is all about. Almost every year, I try to mark my birthday by doing what I love most - playing for friends both new and old. I’ve been slinging wax for over 25 years, and I’ll be showcasing the best-of-the-best in Techno, Chicago House, Electro and Breaks from every corner of the planet.
From outright classics to outright weirdness -
I’m going to take you on a trip you won’t soon forget!"
